Pop music which is a shortened version of Popular Music is generally regarded as music with a commercially constructed sound which is usually directed towards a younger audience. The songs are singles oriented (rather than part of an album concept) and they fit into a 3 minute format give or take 30 seconds. The music is safe, accessible with catchy hooks and melodies. As the name indicates it has an appeal to a wider mainstream audience and looks to not make any bold counter culture statements or be a knee jerk reaction to a particular genre that is in vogue at the time. The 70s brought its own versions of mainstream pop music with the arrival and evolution of such styles as Singer/Songwriter, Power Pop and Adult Contemporary. We also give a nod to Euro Pop as it having reached mass appeal overseas. By the same token the music can also be involve technology and experimentation with a key example being Electronic music.
